Monthly Review Turns 60!

{Monthly Review founders: Harry Magdoff and Paul M. Sweezy}

This May’s issue of the Monthly Review commemorates the leftist magazine’s 60th anniversary. Arriving in the mail today, the fiercely independent and socialist Monthly Review has continued its legacy of promoting independent political thought from preeminent minds throughout the decades.  Looking back to its inception, this month’s issue features an article from Vol.1 No.1 by none other than Albert Einstein.

As one of the greatest minds of all time, Einstein pondered the question, “Why Socialism?” which, given the current capitalist downturn, rings with a historically resounding resonance. In words that could be written today, the relativity theorist wrote, “Clarity about the aims and problems of socialism is of greatest significance in our age of transition. Since, under present circumstances, free and unhindered discussion of these problems has come under a powerful taboo, I consider the foundation of this magazine to be an important public service.”

Sixty years later, Monthly Review continues to be an important service to the public under the guidance of John Bellamy Foster.

Read the entire article “Why Socialism?” by Albert Einstein. What’s the right-wing to say? “Why listen to this guy? He’s no Einstein?” !!!
