New Album by Pilar Diaz Out Now!

Quiksilver SiteLA “Visionary in Residence” Pilar Díaz announces her solo career with a debut self-titled album displaying the musician’s multitude of influences. Having already established a reputation in Latin Alternative music with her previous projects, the Los Angeles-based Díaz continues to redefine sonic landscapes with a unique combination of sounds displayed on her new eight-song effort. The culmination of a year-long supportive residency at Quiksilver’s communal work and exhibition space in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, the Chilean born and Californian raised singer-songwriter’s debut navigates through various musical worlds as Díaz beautifully sings heartfelt songs of a lover’s patience, superstitions, and the struggle for life affirmation. Central to Díaz’s creative and courageous genre-bending approach on the album is the ukulele that lends its folkloric sounds of tranquility to many of her songs whether it is the effects-laden melodies on “Ilegal en Estyle,” or the pensive strumming on “Novia de Soldado.” The instrument takes center stage on the song “Perdido” where the album finds its poetic zenith with profound existential lyricism accompanied by the lamenting sounds of the accordion and viola as played by members of F-Stop Serenade.

Co-Produced by Pilar Díaz, Gabrial McNair (whose previous collaborations include No Doubt and Gwen Stefani), Clay Morrow and the DJ/Dub Gold Cobra crew, the album tempers folkloric influences with irresistible dance rhythms. The song “Friday the 13th (Trece)” also featured in a Gameboy remix by Morrow, employs infectious reggae-influenced riddims while “El Otro Yo,” grooves along a slick bass line and the trumpeteering of Mike Bolger. Blending the best of both worlds, “Like a Piñata,” is unlike any other as it couples the marimba melodies of the Mexican port city of Veracruz with heavy hip hop flavored bass drum hits. The violin strings of Amir Yagmai additionally provide the musical foundation for Díaz’s harmonious flows in the dual intersecting languages of English and Spanish.
